Although both are part of the same university,
BARA is administratively separate from the University of Arizona
Department of Anthropology. Prospective students who are interested
in studying applied anthropology do not actually apply to BARA;
instead, they apply to a different department and through classes
or employment can become involved in the work of BARA. Most
students associated with BARA come from the Anthropology Department,
but students from other departments such as Geography, Agricultural
Economics, Arid Lands, and the School of Planning have also
done excellent work with BARA or asked BARA researchers to serve
on their M.A. or Ph.D. committees.
Students often find that involvement with BARA benefits them
in multiple ways. Working directly with active researchers on
applied anthropology projects is an excellent opportunity to
gain experience in all aspects of research from proposal writing,
to data collection in the field, to the management and analysis
of data, to the development of journal papers and professional
presentations. It is also not uncommon for students interested
in applied anthropology to have worked in non-academic settings
before applying to graduate school, and many students remark
that work on BARA projects provides a useful and invigorating
complement to the knowledge and skills that they are learning
in a classroom setting. Finally, work as a Research Assistant
(RA) for BARA is important to many students as a way of funding
their graduate education, with benefits including a partial
waiver of tuition and fees, health insurance coverage, and a
modest salary that varies according to the number of hours worked
(10-20 hours per week is common).
In recent years BARA has benefited from the experiences and
energies of talented students from Asia, Africa, Europe, North
America, and South America. We take pride in our reputation
for friendly collaboration among students, and believe in welcoming
and learning from each other. We encourage you to browse our
own student-run and peer-reviewed journal, The
Arizona Anthropologist.
Prospective students are encouraged to contact BARA faculty
members, BARA students, or the Department
of Anthropology for further information on the application
process or about the work of BARA. We welcome your interest,
and look forward to hearing from you.
